Review: Oh! Nuts

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

After my post entitled, “Oh, Nuts” where I wrote about almonds, I was contacted by a marketing rep for the website Oh! Nuts (see the correlation?) who asked if I would be interested in trying a couple of their products for review.

Would I be interested? Of COURSE I would be interested. After deciding that jelly beans wouldn’t be such a great idea (again, see the correlation?), he generously offered to send me something healthier to try – raw almonds, shelled raw pistachios (no salmonella here!) and dried blueberries. Ah, much better!

They arrived very quickly and I immediately ripped into the pistachios – thinking too late that I should get a good picture of the product before I ate it all. Hence the crappy cell phone picture.

All three of the items were nicely packaged in heavy, resealable bags. And, after making a pig of myself sampling all of them, I found them to be fresh and delicious. Now, my niece thought the pistachios were stale but, if they were, I didn’t notice it. I thought they were very good. Of course, I scarfed them down so quickly it might have been hard to tell.

And the raw almonds? Everyone who tried them agreed they were THE BEST. I don’t think I’ve ever had raw almonds that were this good. And I’m not just saying that. They really were. They’re so delicious, I’m having a hard time keeping to my “no more than 10 at a time” rule. I tend to avoid buying raw almonds at the grocery store because of the outrageous price. But at $5.99 per pound for all of this deliciousness, I think the raw almonds from Oh! Nuts are quite a bargain.

I was really excited to try the dried blueberries, since I’ve never had them before. And they were so cute! I grabbed a handful right out of the bag and started noshing. Fresh, plump, delicious – and way too sweet for me. They are sweetened with apple juice and, at 17 grams of sugar per 1-ounce serving, they aren’t really THAT outrageous in the sugar category but, for me, too much.

I tried again the next morning by throwing a handful in my oatmeal. Extremely tasty but, unfortunately, brought on a nasty blood sugar drop. Sigh. I handed them over to the sugar-loving minions at work and they were disposed of rather quickly. So, if you’re not me, you would probably love these.

After nosing around on the website for a while, I found they had some really cool stuff. Besides a huge selection of bulk nuts, they have lots of other interesting products, like Wasabi Green Pea Chips, Roasted Watermelon Seeds, Roasted Soy Beans, Dried Kiwi, Granola, AND Sugar-Free Candy and Chocolate. Oh! And I just spotted my favorite – Chocolate Covered Cashews!

All of their products (which, by the way, are all certified Kosher) list complete nutrition information and are customer-reviewed - features I always appreciate on a website.

Oh – and one last thing. Gift Baskets. I always struggle to find gifts to send to my parents because, frankly, they have everything. But they enjoy a unique food gift, so I’ll be keeping Oh! Nuts in mind the next time I have a gift-giving occasion; I feel confident it will be a quality gift they will enjoy.

Dried fruit is another story. Yum!

Yes, in fact, the Minions at Work DO have a sugar problem. Here's the evidence:

Actually, I suppose this may also apply:

I'm not a huge nut fan but do like cashews and love chocolate...so the chocolate covered cashews sound very delicious. I've never heard of dried blueberries either but they sound pretty much like candy so I'm sure they'd be a hit at my house.

Hmmm I have never heard of the company before. I'm always looking for alternatives to mainstream snack crap for my family so I'll check them out.
