They had me at "donut"

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

It’s rare that I come across a piece of fruit that I think is cute. So cute that I have to buy it. But that’s really the only reason I bought a couple of donut peaches the other day. Because they were cute. So cute that I bought them even though they weren’t organic – despite the fact that peaches are reportedly one of the worst fruits to buy conventional. Guess I felt the need for a little dangerous living.

Have you seen these? They’re nothing like your standard fuzzy, drippy peach. They’re kind of flat-ish and low-fuzz and the flesh is white. Because of the shape, they easily break in half and you can pop the pit right out. Kind of like an avocado.

To me, the consistency was like that of a soft pear and it kind of tasted more like a plum than a peach. Having never had them before, I couldn’t tell you where these were on the ripeness scale. Under ripe? Over ripe? Just right? Don’t know, but they were at least fun to eat.

I have this long-standing fantasy in which I buy a large box of donuts and, while sexily dressed in pink pajama pants and one of Mr. Jelly Belly’s oversized t-shirts, I lounge on the couch all day eating donuts and watching trash television - until I can no longer stand the ecstasy of it all and fall into a happy sugar coma. But, like all good fantasies, this one will never see the light of day. But maybe I can improvise with a dozen donut peaches and a Golden Girls marathon.

Somehow, I just don’t think it will be the same.

I always giggle when I hear people talk about these.

especially my hardcore IRL foodie friends as they seem to truly think they take the place of the DUNKIN.

uh, notforme.

They do look cute! Must give them a try if they ever make it over here.

They are cute, I'll give you that. But sadly, they are NOT donuts, and cannot replace donuts. However, I am willing to give them a chance. :) I do love peaches, so I'll be interested to try these. Hope I can find them here.

The girls and I love peaches but the hubs can't stand even the smell ( I KNOW!!! It's such a GOOD smell!!!) so we have to do all of our peach eating on the sneak. These look worth a little sneak...

I would have bought them because they were cute too! I wanted to buy mini bananas on our last grocery trip, but my husband looked at me like I'd lost my mind. ;-)

Very cute indeed! I must ask, why are peaches a dangerous buy? Just wondering because I buy them all the time.

In my neck of the woods, these are called Saturn Peaches. I would be more inclined to buy them if they were called Donuts though :)

I could have totally played out your fantasy while in Winston-Salem recently, home of Krispy Kreme. They have a sign that lights up to tell you when they're hot, for God's sake!

I saw some of those donut peaches at the local store. Since we can never get decent ripe regular peaches, we always pass. Call it peach discrimination. I'm intrigued now, tho....

Love your blog. Unfortunately for me I've lived that fantasy way too many times. Ugh. These days it seems more like a nightmare though.

Maybe if you dunk them in chocolate and have the right wardrobe?

Those ARE cute--I'd never seen them before!

I have to admit, even though I know conventional peaches are not-so-good for you (but still not as bad as berries!), come August, I always buy peaches at the fruit stands that line my drive to the beach. I like supporting the local economy, plus I figure that buying something that was JUST picked and plopped in a basket out front has to be a bit better (in some ways, anyway) than something that was picked, packaged, shipped, bumped, bruised, unloaded...and then artfully arranged at Whole Foods.

I don't know where you got your (adorable) donut peaches, but I guess what I'm trying to say is: Enjoy your donuts ;)!

Oh, and "Tofutti Cuties" are proof that sometimes it's okay to buy food just because it's cute :)
