Why I may be AWOL for a few days

Sunday, April 26, 2009

Thursday afternoon, I was minding my own business eating my lunch. I was eating this:

I was chomping merrily away when a Pain Like No Other seared through the left side of my lower jaw. A seemingly harmless bacon bit had jammed into this:

Yes, it did a hard slam into a broken tooth I was still two weeks away from getting fixed (why do dental appointments take so long?).

I was like this:

And then I felt a little better until Thursday night when I could not sleep for The Pain.

Friday morning a friendly co-worker gave me this:

I was like this:

When I realized The Pain was not going away on its own, I called the dentist on Saturday morning for an emergency appointment. They were sympathetic, but unable to oblige until Monday morning (dentists not working that particular Saturday because that’s the kind of luck I have).

I wonder why they do not have dental emergency rooms. I happily found an almost full bottle of these in the cupboard:

And a bottle of this in another cupboard:

To swish with, not to drink.

Mr. Jelly Belly and I spent all day Sunday like this:

I hope the large bottle of pills lasts until Monday morning, or I may have to hit the streets looking for this:

I don’t know what they will do on Monday morning or how I will feel after. At this point, tooth extraction seems desirable. I may do it myself.

See you soon. I hope.

Ouch! The hubs has had a broken tooth (a big chuck fell out) for over a month now I still can't get him to make an appointment! Dentures by 40 I keep telling him, lol

Ouch! I'm cringing for you, my dear. Hope you get relief soon!

Oh, and after you swish with it - drink it. :)

OH NO! HELL NO!

I hope they fix that right away. Tooth pain is the worst.

Oh, and vicodin definitely helped me get through a painful post-root canal infection. Having the pain go away is euphoric and a buzz all its own. Like, as Bobzilla says, floating on a cloud of titties.

Hang in there!

oh no..working for a dentist for the past 10 yrs I feel your pain. Tooth pain is awful. Hang in there and good luck :) Love your use of illustrations!

Whenever something like this happens to someone I love I'm quite thoughtful (surprisingly).
In this case it is so.
I'm thinking, "How can I manage without me morning Jelly?"
See how thoughtful?

Seriously? Tooth pain is of the devil and I am sorry for you (and frighteningly LIKE you in that I take meds from friends/neighbors and keep plenty o' stuff stashed around.)
I hope they fix you up quick!

FYI Twizzlers are XLNT with vicodin.

Hahaha! Amazing. You're illustrations--not your pain. Of course, I hope you feel better VERY soon!

Oh you poor thing!! I am totally laughing with you, not at you. Really. You are a hoot, even in your agony. I hope they get it fixed first thing tomorrow.

Oh, man! Tooth/mouth pain is the WORST! I hope the dentist makes it all better very very quickly.

Thank you all so much for your kind words. Even those of you who laugh at my pain. :)

So far this morning, I am warding off any further misery and actually finding tea to be very helpful. Wish I would have tried it earlier. Five hours to go...hope I can make it without having to go in with alcohol on my breath...:)

Oh no! I had this happen to me before. I was out of town training for my new job. I was studying on the FIRST night and started chewing on my pencil. All of the sudden I felt a crack and out came 50% of my FRONT tooth! So, I was out of town and couldn't get to a dentist; training for my new job; and had to walk around ALL WEEK missing my front tooth! Now THAT is the kind of luck I have!
I can relate!

This post is hilarious, Darling!
Found you on SITS and am very glad I stopped in to say HI!!!

Oh, Taryn, you win - THAT is definitely worse luck than mine. How awful.

I am all better now. I had a quick and painless (yes, really!) root canal, got a handful of prescriptions and was on my way in under an hour.

Life is good again!

That sounds absolutely terrible!

I had a similar problem a few Easter's ago. I was so sick. My dentist actually had me go to the office on Easter day to patch me up.

Yes, he is a great guy.

Get better!!! Ugh.

Hahahahaha, love this post, cracked me up! Not because you're in pain, but because it's just so funny! I absolutely hate going to the dentist but I've just chipped a tooth so think I'm going to have to make an appointment. Round here it takes 3 weeks (!) to get a routine appointment, ONLY a week for an emergency one! :D

Awh, sweetie I well know your pain. There is nothing worse than tooth pain, is there?! I also do not know why there are no emergency dentists, it's just not right!

I hope everything was taken care of for you that Monday. :)

I have a severe dental phobia. Seriously, my dentist wrote my insurance co. a letter stating it was medically necessary for me have iv sedation for any and all dental work, including cleaning. That was several jobs and insurance cos. ago. Since then, my life has been revolutionized by anxiety meds, but I digress.

My point was, I so feared the dentist in the past I never had a regular dr. to contact in an emergency so have learned lots of ways to "cope" with dental emergencies until someone could see me.

First, swishing definitely helps. A mouthwash with a high alcohol content, like Listerine, will cut the pain. Repeat as often as needed. Even better is a cooking extract with as high an alcohol content as you can find. I think anise extract is one of those. DO NOT SWISH or you will realize you had no idea what pain was prior to swishing. Use a q-tip to dab it on the affected tooth. Try to avoid getting it on your gums.

Second, the max daily dose of ibuprofen is 800 mgs (that's usually 4 pills) 4 x per day (yep, we're talking 16 pills). My mom takes this much each and every day for her arthritis, has for years, and just turned 79. I've found it helpful to load up on the ibuprofen. You may wish to consider it should your vicodin supply dry up. Third, try some clove oil on the spot. It will soothe and anesthetize the nerve/root of the tooth. You'll recognize the smell, dentists use it all the time. These days you probably have to go to a compounding pharmacy to get clove oil.

Use a warm or cold compress on your skin above the affected jaw area, whatever feels best. If you have sleep meds in the house, this might be a good time to use them so you can try to get a bit of rest at night. Also, drink with a straw so cold liquid won't touch the sore tooth.

Hopefully by now you are feeling much better. You have my complete and total sympathy.

I know I'm a few days late on this, but I hope you feel better soon! Are there sympathy or "hurt less soon" cards for teeth? :)
